JOB SUMMARY  

The Engine Mechanic is responsible for assisting the Chief Engineer and the assistant engineer in the maintenance, operation, and repair of all vessel systems onboard ship, including hotel equipment, and as directed by the Chief Engineer. 

 

WORK SCHEDULE 

The Engine Mechanic works 12 hours per day: approximately 6 weeks on, 6 weeks off rotational schedule. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Repair and Maintenance:
  • Under the supervision of the Chief Engineer:
  • Operates and maintains the ship’s propulsion system. 
  • Operates and maintains the electrical generation and distribution system, including emergency power. 
  • Operates and maintains potable water and auto chlorination system. 
  • Operates and maintains black water/gray water/waste tanks, treatment, and testing program. 
  • Operates and maintains HVAC and refrigeration systems. 
  • Performs routine maintenance checks and keeps records of jobs performed.  Keeps the Chief Engineer informed of all maintenance and repairs that have been done.
  • Helps with engineering, deck and hotel preventative maintenance programs on daily, weekly and monthly basis. 
  • Completes maintenance and repair tasks as requested in the Cabin Maintenance Notebook. 
  • Performs hotel maintenance tasks as directed. 
  • Participates in shipyard availabilities. 
  • Assists Chief Engineer in all bunkering operations. 
  • Sweeps decks, washes windows, keeps vessels free of rust, and empties trash receptacles on a regular basis. 
  • Cleans the public restroom and general interior areas such as bulkheads, lockers, etc. 
  • Primes and paints the vessel as assigned. 
  • Assists Deck, Hotel, and Expeditions departments as directed by Chief Engineer. 
  • Uses chemicals for cleaning and ship maintenance while ensuring personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, respirators, etc. are used correctly in accordance with Safety Data Sheets.   
  • May be assigned various special projects as per the Chief Engineers work list. 


Administrative:
  • Uses NSE to update vessel maintenance records for engineering work items.  
  • Assists the Chief Engineer with inventories. 
  • Operates onboard computer using standard and customized software applications. 
  • Maintains compliance of Technical systems onboard with the CDC Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) regulations. 


Safety and Security:
  • Participates in on board safety training, meetings and drills, as directed by the Captain, including fire, abandon ship, man overboard, flooding and medical emergencies.  
  • Supports the ships security arrangements as directed by the Ship Security Officer as needed 
  • Follows company safety and pollution prevention policies and procedures and requests guidance when necessary. 
  • Assists in the preparation the vessel for all U.S. Coast Guard annual dry docks and other inspections. 
  • Participates in shoreside training as required by the company.   
  • Familiar with the ISM and ISPS Codes and requirements. 
  • Familiar with all duties under the company Safety Management System including Emergency Response activities. 


GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • EPA Section 608 Technician Type 1 Certification required. 
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification required. 
  • Valid TWIC card required. 
  • Valid US Passport required. 
  • Valid USCG Medical Card per STCW standard (2 years) 
  • STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) required. 
  • STCW Crowd Management (CM) required. 
  • STCW Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD) required. 
  • Working knowledge of diesel propulsion and electricity generation systems.  Knowledge of support systems such as fuel centrifuges, air compressors, pumps, hydraulics, water makers, hotel systems, plumbing, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning also preferred. 
  • Personal computer experience:  Excel spreadsheet experience, and Windows applications (including Word) is preferred. 
  • Professional demeanor: ability to use appropriate levels of tact and courtesy. 
  • Must be a self-starter, able to handle multiple tasks and work with little supervision and work in small spaces. 
  • Crisis management: work well under pressure, act quickly and decisively using sound judgment. 
  • Maritime/boating experience preferred. 
  • Good customer service skills; professional demeanor, ability to use necessary levels of tact and courtesy. 
  • Detail oriented and thorough; able to follow through on assigned tasks. 
  • Able to work independently using initiative and creativity to complete assigned tasks. 
  • Strong time management skills; able to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines.

Communication Skills   

The Engine Mechanic will have some guest contact and must be professional and have the ability to present information and respond to questions.  Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.   Must be able to provide concise and clear reports as required. Must also possess the ability to effectively communicate--both in writing and orally--with a professional demeanor.   

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS   

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear.  The employee will also be required to write and type.  The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.   


Employment is contingent on the following:

- In compliance with U.S. Coast Guard Regulations, 46 CFR Parts 4, 5, and 16, you will be required to undergo the following drug tests: post-offer prior to start date, random, reasonable cause, and serious marine incident per US Federal guidelines.

- Pre-offer background check; employment is contingent upon the results of this screening.

- Post-offer physical examination; your employment is dependent upon being determined fit for sea duty. 

Continued employment is dependent upon consent to and passing these tests.

COMPENSATION STATEMENT

Lindblad Expeditions determines the pay for positions using local, national, and industry-specific survey data. We evaluate external equity and the cost of labor/prevailing wage index in the relative marketplace for jobs directly comparable to jobs within our company. Our posted salary range is based on national data and may be refined for a candidate's region/town/cost of living.


For new hires, we strive to make competitive offers allowing the new employee room for future growth. Salaries will be based on the applicant’s location, level of experience, education, and specialized knowledge and skills. An employee/candidate with a stronger skill set will receive higher pay.
