JOB SUMMARY:

The Utility Boat Captain is responsible for the overall command and safe operation of a barge and its crew. This role involves ensuring the safe navigation, loading, unloading, and transport of cargo while adhering to all maritime regulations and company policies. The Utility Boat Captain plays a crucial role in maintaining the vessel’s safety, security, and efficiency during operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Vessel Operation and Navigation:
    • Command and operate the barge, ensuring safe navigation and maneuvering in various water conditions in coastal areas.
    • Follow routes, considering weather, tides, and other environmental factors.
    • Maintain communication with Dispatcher, Harbor Master, and Marine Operation Manager.
  2. Cargo Management:
    • Oversee the loading and unloading of cargo, ensuring it is done safely and efficiently.
    • Ensure cargo is properly secured and balanced to maintain vessel stability.
    • Monitor the condition of cargo during transit and address any issues that arise.
  3. Safety and Compliance:
    • Ensure compliance with all maritime regulations, including SOLAS, MARPOL, and company policies.
    • Perform regular inspections of safety equipment, including life jackets, fire extinguishers, emergency alarms and First Aid Kits.
    • Maintain detailed logs and records of all voyages, incidents, and maintenance activities.
  4. Crew Management:
    • Lead, manage, and supervise the crew, ensuring they perform their duties safely and efficiently.
    • Provide guidance to crew members on operational and safety procedures.
    • Manage crew assignments, and performance evaluations.
  5. Maintenance and Upkeep:
    • Oversee the maintenance and repair of the barge’s machinery, equipment, and hull.
    • Coordinate with the engineering team to address any technical issues promptly.
    • Ensure the vessel is clean, well-maintained, and seaworthy at all times.
  6. Emergency Response:
    • Act as the primary decision-maker in emergency situations, ensuring the safety of the crew, vessel, and cargo.
    • Coordinate with emergency services and other vessels in the event of an incident.
    • Conduct thorough investigations and reporting following any accidents or incidents.
  7. Communication and Coordination:
    • Liaise with Dispatcher, warehouses, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
    • Provide regular updates to the Marine Operations Manager regarding vessel status and any operational concerns.
    • Ensure clear and effective communication within the crew and with external parties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in marine operations, with at least 2 years in a leadership role, preferably on a barge or similar vessel.
  • Certifications: Valid Captain's License (D3 or above) current CPR/First Aid and any other relevant maritime certifications.
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership and decision-making abilities.
    • Excellent navigation and ship-handling skills, particularly with barges.
    • In-depth knowledge of maritime regulations, safety protocols, and cargo handling.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work under pressure and handle emergencies effectively.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The role involves working in marine environments, often in varying weather conditions.
  • The position may require extended periods at sea or on waterways, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Physical demands include standing for long periods, handling heavy equipment, and working in confined spaces.
